Msunduzi and Ncome Museums is an agency of the Department of Arts and Culture situated in Pietermaritzburg and Ncome (Nquthu). The museum is looking for suitably qualified individuals to fill the following positions:

MUSEUM GUIDE (Level 5) Ref: MG Msunduzi Museum

Salary: R161 131.69 per annum

Requirements: Grade 12 certificate, Tourism certificate or Diploma plus two years’ experience in museum or heritage environment, fluency in English and Zulu or Afrikaans, good verbal communication skills, computer literacy and a valid code B driver’s licence .

Recommendations: Accreditation as a tour guide.

Duties: Welcome visitors at the Church of the Vow.   Conduct guided tours and presentations to Museum visitors and school groups. Check museum exhibits daily. Answer questions about exhibitions and about the museum in general.  Assist in ensuring health and safety issues are reported to health and safety representative.  Report all maintenance required for the complex.  Assist in ensuring the complex is neat and tidy all the time.  Assist in planning and organising Museum events and activities.  Assist in carrying out education and outreach activities.  Assist in planning and organising holiday programme.  Manage and sell stock at the complex and do stock check quarterly.  Manage visitors’ access to exhibits and maintain security.   Record visitor numbers for the complex daily.

LIBRARIAN LEVEL 6

CENTER: PIETERMARITZBURG

SALARY: R193 485.94

REF:  LIB: RIC/MSUNDUZI

Requirements: Degree or 3 year Diploma in Library and Information Studies; minimum 2 years’ experience working as a Librarian; Valid code B Drivers Licence.

Recommendation: Honours Degree in Library and Information studies; Archival Records Management Certificate; Qualification/experience in book repair and conservation; Experience in archives/special collections.

Competencies: Computer literacy (including MS word, excel, power-point, email, internet); Excellent communication skills; Proficiency in English and isiZulu or Afrikaans; Punctuality; Organizational skills; team player; flexible approach to the requirements of the post; customer service attitude, problem-solving skills; attention to detail; knowledge of classification and cataloguing. 

Duties include: Managing the Museum Library and Internet Café; expanding the library collection (i.e purchases and donations); documentation, labelling, filing, organizing material for easy use and retrieval; control, preservation and conservation of the Library material; Provide professional services to Library and internet café visitors and staff, including answering enquiries, retrieval of information, scanning, making copies, dealing with book loans from staff and arranging inter-library loans, Security (i.e. monitoring visitors to ensure no losses, no misuse of library assets, no unruliness, locking doors, not leaving the library unattended), making sure the newspaper is available, sending out book requests and keeping visitor statistics; Annual stock taking of library holdings, complying with GRAP 103 and providing assistance during audits of the library collection; Keeping accession register, databases and other electronic catalogues up to date; Cutting articles from newspapers; Driving a museum vehicle to perform duties, attend meetings etc and occasionally driving to Ncome Museum; Promote Library and internet café including posting of information on Facebook, displaying new books and information, and organizing events; Keeping the library neat (i.e. tidy, no food/beverages); Contribute to museum committees including committees for organizing events; Compiling the museum newsletter; Contribute articles for museum publications i.e Ulwazi; Presenting talks to the public, presenting papers at conferences;  provide input and assist with responsible use of budget for the Department; monitoring functionality of computers, Occasionally assist in other sections within the department or the museum; Assist with supervising and training interns.

ADMIN ASSISTANT (Level 5) Ref: ADM/ASS  Msunduzi Museum

Salary: R161 131.69 per annum

Requirements: Grade 12 certificate or equivalent with Accounting and Maths/Maths Lit as subjects. two years’ experience, fluency in English and Zulu or Afrikaans, good verbal communication skills ability to deal with people at all levels, interest in purchasing management, knowledge of supply chain management processes, computer literacy and a valid code B driver’s licence.

Recommendations: Relevant tertiary qualification with financial accounting or supply chain management as subjects.

Duties: Responsible for the procurement and assist by providing administration support. To ensure SCM processes by controlling, monitoring contracts register file to ensure that all new contracts are registered, handling requisitions, checking funds availability. Assist in Asset management. Filling, faxing and answering telephone, attend to administrative queries, reconciliation of standing advances, substance and travel claims, and stock control. Basic Bookkeeping and financial Management and other tasks assigned by the supervisor.
